Venice, early 16th cent. Marble. The relief shows a profile view of Christ with a straight nose, closed lips and a calm view, the hair glides in thick hair strands over the shoulders, the robe is carved in fine sculptural folds and covered by a cape. Two collector's labels on the reverse side. Minor losses. H. 38 cm, w. 27 cm. - The relief is not signed, but follows in his classical tendencies the tradition of ideal portrait sculpture in Venice dominated by the style of Pietro and Tullio Lombardo. - Literature: A very similar marble relief recently attributed to the Venetian sculptor Tullio Lombardo exists in the collection of the Kimbell Art Musem in Fort Worth, Texas.
