L. studied at the Academy in Karlsruhe, where he was student of Wilhelm Trübner. Since 1906 L. lived in Hamburg. He painted the animals and birds from the sea coasts of north sea and baltic sea and from Iceland in particular. He was specialized in depicting animals in a naturalistic-ornamental manner.
