Around 1900. Bronze with black patina. Ligated sign. to the top side of the plinth 'HBaucke fec.(it)' and foundry mark ''DÜSSELDF. BRONCEBILDGIESSEREI G.M.B.H'. Dirty and some spots to the patina. H. 65,5 cm (figure), h. 12 cm (stone base, chipped). - 'The Winner' was Baucke's first major work (1897, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf) and has been purchased 1900 by the 'Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen', several copies were made, including one in the National Gallery Berlin. - German sculptor, studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Karl Janssen, since 1903 located in Berlin and received orders by Emperor William II for Charlottenburg Palace and Potsdam.
