Oil/wood, 41,5 x 71 cm, on the reverse Antwerp panel maker's guild mark, faint maker's mark possibly by Guilliam Gabron (1609-1674) as well as old inventory label with Bavarian coat of arms and no. 3498. - We are grateful to Justin Davies, Antwerp, for his assistance in identifying the marks. - Flemish marine painter. Very little is known about his life. In 1609 he became member of the Antwerp St. Luke's guild, 1628-30 he lived in Genoa. He painted dramatic seascapes and battles, sometimes with monstrous fishes.
