Oil/wood, 20 x 15 cm, up. ri. sign. E. Grützner, framed under glass. - German figure and history painter. G. studied 1864-70 at the Munich academy, among others under H. Anschütz, since 1867 as master student in the studio of C. T. von Piloty. In 1886 he became professor, in 1916 he was ennobled. Besides C. Spitzweg G. is the most important German genre painter of the second half of the 19th cent. He soon became very successful.
