Giorgio de Chirico (Volos 1888 - Rom 1978) - Sell & Buy

Italian painter, graphic artist and sculptor, co-founder of the 'pittura metafisica'. C. first studied painting in Athens and Florence, then in Munich from 1906-09, where he was deeply impressed by the works of Böcklin, Marées and Stuck. He then moved to Paris, where he exhibited at the Salon d'automne from 1911. Together with his brother A. Savinio and C. Carrà, he became the founder of so-called metaphysical painting in Ferrara in 1916. He returned to Paris in 1924 and was celebrated as a forerunner of Surrealism. C. exhibited at Documenta I to III, among others. His metaphysical paintings are characterized by ghostly empty spaces, articulated dolls and enigmatic still lifes.
