Ferdinand Konrad Bellermann (Erfurt 1814 - Berlin 1889) - Sell & Buy

German landscape painter. B. studied at the drawing school in Weimar and the academy in Berlin under K. Blechen and A. W. Schirmer. He then went on study trips, sometimes accompanied by P. C. Schreiber and Fr. Preller, through Germany, to Belgium, the Netherlands and Norway. B.'s accuracy both in the depiction of the landscape and of individual plants earned him a travel scholarship to Venezuela arranged by A. von Humboldt. After his return, he became a professor in 1857 and succeeded Schirmer in Berlin in 1866, where the Prussian royal family became an important customer for his paintings through Humboldt. He exhibited in numerous German cities and at the world exhibitions in Paris and Vienna. Starting out from an academic style, B. developed a looser style of painting over the course of his career, without becoming unfaithful to the precision already evident in his early work. Mus.: Berlin (Nat.-Gal., Kupferstichkabinett), Potsdam, Erfurt, Schwerin, Celle, Altenburg. Lit.: Thieme-Becker, Bénézit.
