German landscape painter. After being trained as taxidermist G. travelled South America 1856-59. Thereafter he studied at the Leipzig academy under H. Knaur a. in London under J. Wolf. 1866-74 he lived in South America again, mostly in Venezuala, before returning to Leipzig. Lit.: Thieme-Becke, Bénézit.
