Maurice-Étienne Falconet (Paris 1716 - ebd. 1791) - Sell & Buy
French sculptor and important representative of Louis XV sculpture. After training as a marble sculptor F. worked in the workshop of J. B. Lemoyne and was inducted into the French Academy in 1754. With protection from Madame de Pompadour F. became director of the modelling department in Sèvres in 1757 and created numerous models for biscuitgroups and figures. 1767 he was called to St Petersburg by Catherine The Great, where he created his most important work, the colossal equestrian statue of Peter I. His extensive oeuvre contains especially mythological and allegorical themes made of terracotta, biscuit, marble and bronze.
