Swiss painter, graphic artist and sculptor. A. studied at the Munich Academy 1886-88. Together with G. Giacometti he studied at the Académie Julian in Paris in 1888-89, among others with W. Bouguereau. A., technically virtuoso and stylistically changeable, is one of the leading Swiss avant-gardists. Mus.: London (Tate), Paris, Zurich, Basel, Solothurn, Winterthur a. others.
