German artist of Syrian origin. M. studied Arabic literature at the University of Damascus until 1957. After moving to Germany, he studied painting at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin with Hann Trier. He was himself a professor at this university from 1980 to 2002. In 2005 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
