Significant representative of the german colour field painting. Studied architecture at the Munich School of Arts and Crafts and subsequently worked as an architect. He devoted himself to painting as an autodidact from the 1940s. He was a founding member of the ‘Zen-49’ group and professor of painting at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
