German painter, graphic artist a. film-maker. B. studied at the Werkkunstschule Krefeld under R. Sackenheim a. 1961-63 at the Düsseldorf academy under O. Coester. He moved to Berlin before becoming professor in Hamburg in 1971. Besides G. Richter a. S. Polke B. is one of the main exponents of 'Capitalist Realism'.
