Oil/canvas, 49,5 x 61 cm, rest., relined. - Joseph of the biblical narrative, sold as a slave by his brothers, had risen to become Pharaoh's vizier in Egypt. During a famine in Israel, his brothers came to him to buy grain from Pharaoh's powerful steward. They did not recognise their brother Joseph after all this time. Joseph put them to the test in various ways, first by having his brother Simeon arrested, and later Benjamin. In the end, the family is happily reunited. - Dutch history and portrait painter and architect. B. was probably an apprentice of H. Goltzius and C. de Harlem. In 1625 he became a member of the Guild of St. Luke in Harlem. The versatile artist took inspiration from the Mannerists, Utrecht Caravaggists and Rembrandt, the classicistic late work follows P.
