W. studied at the Stuttgart Academy under H. Trökes from 1962. He received several scholarships, including for the Villa Romana in Florence and the Villa Massimo in Rome. W. was a professor at several academies, most recently serving as rector of the Munich Academy. In 2022, the Albertina in Vienna honored the artist with a retrospective.
