Political conditions and developments are reflected in the various materials and symbolic forms M. uses. Thus the use of clay and loam is not only a reference to the land and its fertility, but was at the time also a means of boycotting Israeli painting materials. The artist understands cracks developing in the drying clay as an expression of an unresolved situation among his Palestinian people and their environment. - Provenance: Acquired by the consignor in 1993 in an exhibition organized by the Palestinian journalist Abed Othman in the apartment of a journalist friend in Cologne in the presence of the artist. - M. is one of the most important Palestinian artists. He studied at the Bezalel High School of Art and Design in Jerusalem from 1967-70. From the beginning of his artistic activity, Palestinian identity and aspirations have played a central role. M. is also very active in Palestinian cultural politics. In 1973 he co-founded the League of Palestinian Artists. In 1987, in response to the second Intifada, M. founded the 'New Visions' movement with Vera Tamari, Tayseer Barakat andnd Nabil Anani. In 1994, he was among the founders of the Al-Wasiti Art Center for the international networking of Palestinian artists. He also teaches at Al-Quds University in Jerusalem. His works have been on display at the Louvre Abu Dhabi, as well as in Paris, New York and Cairo. The artist lives and works in Jerusalem and Ramallah. Mus.: London (Brit.
