N. studied art education in Greifswald with Herbert Wegehaupt and worked as a teacher before studying painting at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art from 1965-70. After freelancing, he received a professorship at this university in 1988. In addition to his academic teacher Wegehaupt, he received groundbreaking artistic impulses from Otto Niemeyer-Holstein.
