After initial artistic training in Philadelphia and service in the Second World War, S. studied at Hans Hofmann's School of Fine Art in New York from 1947. He soon joined the circle of leading abstract expressionists. Between 1960 and 1979, he held numerous teaching positions, including at Princeton and Columbia Universities.
