Studied architecture at the Munich School of Arts and Crafts and subsequently worked as an architect. He devoted himself to painting as an autodidact from the 1940s. He was a founding member of the ‘Zen-49’ group and professor of painting at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Participated in numerous exhibitions such as documenta and the Biennale XXV in Sao Paulo.
