A Rare Marble Sculpture 'Rhesus Monkey'

Hessische Kunstwerkstätten Altmorschen. Around 1921. Marble, glass eyes. H. 35 cm. Signed Krieger, the inset company logo of the 'Kunstwerkstätten' in the bottom, work no. 144. Very minor chipped. Crouching monkey with his paws in his lap, head turned slightly to the right, tail in front of his body on the plinth. - In 1921, Prof. Wilhelm Krieger concluded a contract with 'C. George Hessische Kunstwerkstätten Altmorschen', according to which several of the sculptor's models were to be produced in marble copy in the future. The ‘Hessische Kunstwerkstätten Altmorschen’ produced from 1919 to 1932. It is not possible to quantify how many marble copies of the rhesus monkey were made, but it can be assumed that there were only a few. The present marble sculpture was based on the model ‘Rhesus monkey’ WVZ no. 112 (179) - Expertise: We would like to thank Dr. Schmidt-Magin for his statement by email dated March 28, 2025 - Literature: Cat. rais. Krieger/Schmidt no. 112 (179), Plaster and porcelain Hutschenreuther design - Provenance: Privately owned in central Germany for around 90 years - German sculptor. After an apprenticeship as a decorative painter, Krieger studied briefly at the Kunstgewerbeschule München in 1906/07 and trained as a self-taught sculptor from 1901. From 1907 he participated in the exhibitions of the Munich Secession, the large Berlin art exhibitions and from 1937-1944 in the annual Great German Art Exhibition at the Haus der Kunst.
