Oil/wood, 52 x 70,5 cm, sign. lo. ri. Hans Makart, on the reverse seal with Austrian double-headed eagle a. inscription "Verz. St. K.K.H.Z.A. Wien", blackened inscription "H.O. Miethke" as well as old label. - Prov.: Gallery Miethke, Vienna; Berlin private collection. - With its combination of warm red, brown and silvery white the painting at hand is a typical example of the much vaunted colorism of Makart. He needs only few brush strokes to accentuate the lustre and the opulence of the lady’s dress. - History a. figure painter, main exponent of the Vienna historism whose style became formative for painting, architecture, interior decoration, stage design a. applied arts not only in Austria but also in Germany, he begann his training 1858 at the Vienna academy, beeing dismissed for lack of talent he continued to study under J.
