Oil/canvas, 28,5 x 32,5 cm, on the reverse a. on the stretcher estate stamp. - Cat. rais.: Heiderich 260; Vriesen 529, fig. p. 339. - Prov.: 1910 until at least 1957 property of Anni Breuer, housemaid of the Macke family, in 1960 sold by auction house Lempertz to a Hamburg private collector, thence by descent. - German painter who notwithstanding his short life created one of the most important oeuvres of expressionism, he dropped out of school in 1904 against his parent"s wishes to study at the Düsseldorf academy, he left the academy soon for its academical teaching methods, deeply impressed by the impressionist which he saw on a trip to Paris he decided to take lessons with L. Corinth, in Munich he made friends with F. Marc, in 1911 a. 1912 he partook in the first exhibitions of the "Blauer Reiter", he also took a share in the organisation of avantgardist exhibitions in Berlin a. in the Rhineland, in the beginning of 1914 he travelled to Tunisia with P. Klee a. L. Moilliet, in the autumn of 1914 he died in the battlefields of the Champagne. After various experiments with the variant genres of modernism he developed a style that is characterised by the effects of light, bright light a. a harmonious composition. - Mus.: Madrid (Mus.
