Bloemert fe., on the frame Christie's label. - To escape the persecution of Herod, who suspected the child of Bethlehem to be a rival to his throne, the Holy Family fled to Egypt from where it only returned after the Kings death. - Exhibition: The painting was in the Musée national d'histoire et d'art Luxembourg as a permanent loan from the present owners since 2008. - Literature: Cat. rais.: Roethlisberger/Bok: Abraham Bloemaert and his sons, p. 385, no. 753; M. Niesewand, sale Heberle, Cologne, 15. April 1885; sale Rudolf Bangel, Frankfurt, 19. March 1927, lot no. 236; since then property of the family of the present owner in Luxembourg. She consigned it for an auction at Christie’s Amsterdam in May 1998 but withdrew it before the sale for private reasons. - Dutch history painter. B. was initially taught painting by his father, thereafter by several masters in Paris from 1581 to 1585, and shortly by Hieronymus Francken in Antwerp. He worked in Amsterdam and Utrecht where he was co-founder of the St. Luke's guild in 1611. B. is founder and one of the most import masters of the Utrecht painter's school. The Utrecht caravaggists H. ter Bruggen, G. van Honthorst and J. van Bijlert were among his pupils as were C. van Poelenburgh, J. C. Cuyp and J. B. Weenix.
